Variability of seed-set in alfalfa and correlations with some pollen and ovule characteristics

Variability of seed-set in alfalfa and correlations with some pollen and ovule characteristics

Canadian Journal of Plant Science 61(2): 319-323

In one experiment, 30 randomly selected cultivars were grown to maturity in pots in the greenhouse and were selfed and reciprocally crossed. Seed set after selfing averaged only 19% of that after cross pollination and was significantly correlated (r = 0.31) with pollen viability. Abundance of pollen was correlated with pollen tube length and with pollen viability. The broad-sense heritability for seed set was low after selfing but high after crossing.
