Variability of the reproductive organs of a Moldavian beech population

In cupule morphology and structure of the staminate flowers, the population displayed characteristics of Fagus sylvatica and F. orientalis, and also characteristics intermediate between these species, and could not be assigned to either. On the basis of statistical studies of variation, the population could not be assigned to any of the botanical varieties or forms described in the literature.
