Variation among wheat cultivars for chlorophyll content

Seven varieties of soft red winter wheat differing in visual leaf colour were grown in the field at pH 5.2 and 6.1. Significant differences between varieties were found for chlorophyll characteristics expressed on fresh weight, dry weight and leaf area bases. Dark green varieties had significantly higher values for total chlorophyll, chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b and ratio of chlorophyll a : b, based on fresh weight and leaf area, than did light green varieties.
