Variation in casein from individual human milk samples

Casein was prepared from samples of human milk obtained at various stages of lactation. Yield was low from colostrum but increased after the 5th day of lactation. On disc polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, the characteristic 6 bands of beta -casein appeared 1st in casein from day 5 milk. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis revealed that casein from colostrum contained mainly lactoferrin and a component with the mobility of IgA.
