Chromosome counts were carried out in 1420 PMCs from 71 autotetraploid plants. Over 60% of cells had 40 chromosomes, but between 36 and 42 occurred in the others. Bivalents or quadrivalents were usual on pairing (65 and 34.5% respectively). Trivalents were not seen and univalents were rare. Unbalanced gametes, resulting from irregular segregation in anaphase I, caused pollen abortion. Rings or chains were much commoner than other abnormal meiotic configurations.
