Variation in photoperiodic tuber formation in Eleocharis kuroguwai (Cyperaceae)

The duration of tuber formation was studied for 27 clones of Eleocharis kuroguwai from the extremity of the Kii peninsula (33 deg 28'N) to Akita Prefecture (39 deg 53'N). Five ramets from a clone were subjected to short day (8 h), long day (16 h) or natural day lengths; short days always promoted tuberization. Clones were divided into 3 groups with all (I), some (II) or none (III) of the ramets producing tubers.
