A brief account of an investigation in stands of mature Scots pine and Norway spruce in the Archangel region. Ring area was calculated from the radial increment measured for the last 20 yr on 31 sample trees at heights of 0, 1, 1.3, and 3 m and then at 2-m intervals to the top of the tree. Fluctuations in area from year to year were more or less synchronous at the different heights.
