Variation in the composition of breast milk during the first 5 weeks of lactation: implications for the feeding of preterm infants

24-h milk samples were collected from 10 healthy mothers of term infants on days 1, 3, 5, 8, 15, 22, 29 and 36 of lactation. Aliquots were removed for analysis of trichloroacetic acid-precipitable protein, non protein N, total protein, lactose, triglycerides, phospholipids, cholesterol, energy, Na, K, Ca, Mg, Zn, Cu, pH and osmolality. Results present a comprehensive picture of the development of milk composition from transitional to mature milk.
