Variation in the quantitative characters of cucumber seeds in the maternal form Melkobugorchatyi 29

Tr VNII selektsii i semenovod ovoshch kul' tur (10): 10-17

In pure lines of Melkobugorchatyi 29 inbred for 19 generations, wide variability was found for seed number per fruit and 1000-seed weight. Prolonged inbreeding over more than 14 generations led to a decline in seed yield. Selection for many-seededness and large-seededness was ineffective, since these characters are polygenic and controlled by many loci. Indirect selection for high fruit and seed set by selection for 1000-seed weight was unsuccessful.
