Variation in the sensitivity of successive variable antigen types in a Trypanosoma (Trypanozoon) brucei subspecies clone to some African game animal sera

A clone of Trypanosoma brucei was passaged in rats at 10-day intervals so as to obtain 7 successive variable antigen types (VATs). These were then tested against various human and game sera in a modification of the Blood Incubation Infectivity Test. (The trypanosomes were incubated for 2 h with the serum to be tested and then inoculated into 3 rats to see whether any infective trypanosomes survived).
