Variation of seed-scale shape and the structure of Urals populations of Picea obovata

Variation of seed-scale shape and the structure of Urals populations of Picea obovata

Lesovedenie (6): 19-25

An analysis was made of the shape and dimensions of the seed-scales in cones of P. obovata over a range from 50 deg to 65 deg E. and from the Arctic circle to the southern boundary of the natural range of the species. The average pointedness of the scale increased with improving site conditions, and also increased from E. to W. and from N. to S. The different Urals populations could be clearly differentiated by this character; seven population groups distinguished on this basis are mapped.
