29 maize silages produced on-farm in 1977 were used to estimate variation in chemical composition and nutritive value between silages. Mean DM content, xylose, mannose, arabinose and galactose in the hemicellulose fraction, cellulose content, total N, acid detergent fibre, cell wall constitutents, lignin and in vitro DOM in the DM were determined.
