Variations in photosynthetic indices and productivity of barley cultivars under different photoperiods

Barley from Hungary, the Moscow area, Argentina and Japan (3 cv.) were grown under natural daylength (av. 18 h) or 12-h photoperiods. In the 3 Japanese cv., grain yield increased from 0.7-1.1 g/plant under long days to 1.9-2.1 g under short days. In the other 3 yields fell from 1.8-2.4 g/plant under long days to 1.1-1.6 g under short days. The rate constant of photosynthesis was higher in short than in long days in both groups.
