Variations in plasma components in lactating mares at late pregnancy and early lactation

Variations in plasma components in lactating mares at late pregnancy and early lactation

Annales de Recherches Veterinaires 12(3): 219-225

Weekly blood samples were obtained for 2 months from 2 non-pregnant, non-lactating mares aged 5-8 yr, and 4 mares during the 4 wk before parturition and the 1st 5 wk of lactation. Each animal received 1.8 kg concentrate/day + ad lib. hay. Av. daily DM intake was 16.2 kg during late gestation and 20.6 kg during early lactation. Plasma contents of non-esterified fatty acids, urea, protein, Ca and P were not significantly affected by the change in physiological state.
