In 13 of 14 Friesian cows 3-9-yr-old and between 40 and 330 days post partum, plasma prolactin (PRL) concn. increased significantly after milking, from 56.6 plus or minus 4.6 ng/ml immediately before milking to 79.7 plus or minus 2.8 ng/ml 15 min after the beginning of milking (P < 0.001). By 30 min after the beginning of milking, PRL concn. (60.0 plus or minus 4.5 ng/ml) had nearly returned to the concn. before milking.
