Variations of chloroplast DNAs in the genus Pelargonium and their biparental inheritance

Plastid inheritance was studied in 16 cvs of Pelargonium zonale, P. radula, P. roseum, P. peltatum and P. fragrans. Comparison of EcoRI patterns of chloroplast DNAs demonstrated a remarkable inter- and intraspecific plastome variation. The plastome of the P. zonale cvs could be differentiated into groups (I, II and III). The variation seemed to result from the occurrence of numerous spontaneous plastome mutations, intense hybridization by gardeners and breeders, and biparental plastid inheritance. Maternal and paternal plastids remained genetically unchanged in the variegated F1 hybrids of crosses between the cv. Flower of Spring (white or white-edged shoots with white plastids of plastome type I) and Trautlieb (green shoots with wild-type chloroplasts of plastome type II).
