In 14 strains of S. italica from Japan and 6 from other countries sown on 6 dates from 31 May 1971 to 26 March 1972 to give different temp. conditions and grown in daylengths of 9, 14 or 19 h, the relationships between growth period and temp. and between leaf number and temp. both during the young panicle stage showed that there was a critical temp. at which growth period varied radically. In a given strain the critical temp. increased as daylength increased.
