Pigeonpea is the major kharif pulse of India. Recent research indicates that pigeonpea cultivation can be extended into zones previously thought inappropriate for profitable cropping. Since production systems for pigeonpea generally involve intercropping, the need for new pigeonpea cultivars having better yields when intercropped with millets is discussed. Reductions in yield (compared to sole crop yields) of as little as 8% have been reported in one pigeonpea genotype, NP (WR) 15 X 1258 F3.
