Varietal characteristics and breeding of new varieties in Italian ryegrass

Varietal characteristics and breeding of new varieties in Italian ryegrass

JARQ 15(2): 117-121

A total of 134 varieties of Lolium multiflorum, L. westerwoldicum and L. rigidum, collected from 18 countries, was classified into five groups on the basis of plant type and heading time. The relationships found between these groups and place of origin, growth duration, yielding ability, resistance to Puccinia coronata, crude protein content and nitrogen-free extract are given. Greater numbers of early-maturing varieties tended to be found at lower latitudes.
