Varietal reaction to deficit irrigation

Field trials were conducted with potato Russet Burbank, Lemhi, Nooksack and Butte on sand and fine sandy loam soils irrigated with 2-23 in of water in a 2-month test period. Potato plants grown in a sandy soil mostly died at the lower irrigation rates. At the higher irrigation rates, Russet Burbank was high-yielding, but this was severely affected by water deficit. Lemhi yielded more than Russet Burbank at low irrigation rates but had a smaller av. tuber size.
