Varietal resistance to Helminthosporium oryzae in rice

After the inoculation of 30-day-old plants of four varieties with a conidial suspension of the pathogen, IR8 was found to be the most resistant and IR880 slightly less so. Immersion of 15-day-old plants in an H2S solution for from 0.5 to 2 h produced a comparable differentiation, as judged by plant mortality or by the reduction in the number of green leaves per plant, the same varieties again being the most resistant.
