The causes of low grain yield of maize in the rain forest zone of S. Nigeria were studied. Generally, agronomic practices limiting yield included sowing date (yield decreased by 420 kg/ha for every 2 wk delay in sowing with the 1st rains in March), plant density (opt. density for most of the evaluated was 33-44 thousand plants/ha; most farmers grow their crops at densities much lower than this), fertilizer application and farming system.
