Waste water treatment in the dairy industry. II. Treatment of dairy effluents by a trickling filter packed with plastic spheres

Reports of Research Laboratory, Snow Brand Milk Products Co 74: 51-61

Diluted skim milk used as model dairy effluent was treated at 13-15 deg C in an aeration tank or a trickling filter, or a combination of both methods. The trickling filter consisted of 4 acrylic tubes 1 m in height, diam. 180 mm, filled with plastics spheres to give a surface area of 350 m2/m3, and connected in series. The tank was aerated at 1.63 m3/m3/h; the amount of dissolved O2 was >4 mu l/l.
