Water status of cotton as related to taproot length

Agronomy Journal 72(4): 577-580

In greenhouse trials, cotton plants were grown in pots 26 cm deep or in soil-filled tubes 120 cm long supported by base pots which were watered. In tubes the tap root developed strongly but there was little other root growth, while in pots the tap roots 20 cm from the base of the plant were not well defined because of extensive branching.
