An extensive review is given of the history, current status and future prospects of weed research. Following an account of early developments in weed science, including the discovery of phenoxyacetic acid compounds and other selective herbicides, the respective roles of government and industry in the organization and implementation of research and some of the more basic studies on weed biology and herbicide technology are discussed in detail.
