A computer model to calculate the daily light integral and transmissivity of a greenhouse

A computer model to calculate the daily light integral and transmissivity of a greenhouse

Journal of Agricultural Engineering Research 28(1): 61-76

The elements of computer model suitable for optimizing a conventional greenhouse with flat side and roof planes are presented. Modular program construction is envisaged, to allow flexibility of program modifications. Data and concepts for sun and sky luminosity are taken from previous work, but the interactions of incident light with the greenhouse planes are developed here in terms of 3-dimensional co-ordinate geometry. The model embraces the principal light transmitting and attenuating surfaces associated with a typical UK greenhouse. Structures within the greenhouse volume are ignored, and the floor is assumed to be flat. A convenient element size for digitizing the light input to and reflections within the greenhouse is detailed. Transmissivity prediction and experimental measurements are successfully compared for 1 greenhouse.
