A geographical cline in egg weights in Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and its significance in population dynamics

A geographical cline in egg weights in Choristoneura fumiferana (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) and its significance in population dynamics

Canadian Entomologist, 1159: 1103-1108

The mean weights of the initial eggs of the forest pest Choristoneura fumiferana (Clem.) varied within and between populations in Canada. Measurements of collections from across the range of the tortricid revealed the presence of a cline directly related to latitude and longitude. Mean values ranged from 0.219 mg in the north-west to 0.157 in the south-east. A similar cline, also related to latitude but negative in slope, was demonstrated for the number of eggs per unit pupal weight.
