A gryllid causing damage to rice seedlings

A gryllid causing damage to rice seedlings

Science and Culture 48(3): 113-114

Euscyrtus sp. is recorded for the 1st time on rice in India, being observed in May-June 1980 causing heavy leaf damage along the coast of Karnataka. Populations were very high during these months, with a density of 2-3 insects/hill, but they decreased with the onset of the monsoon. In some localities, the infestation rate reached 80-90%, and the species should now be considered as an important economic pest. The nature of the damage caused is briefly described.
