A hypothesis on polyploidy and evolution of Solanum nigrum L

A hypothesis on polyploidy and evolution of Solanum nigrum L

Science and Culture 48(6): 206-207

Natural populations of S. nigrum have previously been classified into three types: type I being diploid and having shiny, bluish-black fruits, type II being tetraploid and having orange-red fruits, and type III being hexaploid with purplish-black fruits larger than those of types I and II. The three types grow sympatrically but it has been reported that hybridization does not occur between them.
