A laboratory rearing technique for black maize beetles, Heteronychus spp. (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), and notes on their life cycle

Heteronychus arator (F.) (a pest of maize and potato in the Highveld, South Africa) and H. tenuestriatus Fairm. (which is not considered a major pest of these crops) were reared in the laboratory at 25 deg C and 60-90% RH for 1 and 2 generations, respectively. The adults were fed on potato tubers and the larvae on decaying organic matter in soil. The eggs hatched in about 14 days.
