A longitudinal study on anaemia of pregnancy in a rural population of Uttar Pradesh

A controlled longitudinal study on anemia carried out in a rural community of Uttar Pradesh, [India] showed an overall prevalence rate of .apprx. 68%, in pregnant women and 25% in non-pregnant women. In .apprx. 43% of the cases, anemia was either caused or precipitated by pregnancy. Overall gross and net incidence rates of anemia in pregnant women for a period of 3 mo. were about 30 and 44%, respectively. Hb levels were observed to be lower in pregnant women than in non-pregnant women. The Hb levels decreased with increases in gestational age.
