A mathematical model and analysis of the flight maintenance mechanism in the cockroach Periplaneta americana

A mathematical model is constructed that describes the displacement of the flagellum in relation to the pedicel during active movement of the antenna of Periplaneta americana (L.) in an air current. With the aid of this model, the flight maintenance mechanism in the cockroach was analysed on the basis of 5 different variables. The analysis showed that increase in speed of the air current from 0 to 5 m/s results in load asymmetry in the pedicel receptors that maintain flight.
