A mathematical model for determining an economically optimal heifer calf rearing system

Rearing heifer calves has to be optimum from the nutritional and economic standpoint. Taking this into account a computer model was developed which considered the most relevant variables to the system, such as nutritional requirement, rumen development, daily weight gains and availability and prices of feedstuffs. Thus an optimum rearing system can be determined for each particular situation. This model is adequate for female calves of 35 kg birth weight weaned at a minimum of 21 days old.
