A mature avian eye fluke (Philophthalmus sp.) under the human conjunctiva

A mature avian eye fluke (Philophthalmus sp.) under the human conjunctiva

Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde 179(5): 373-375

A 27-year-old man from Sri Lanka complained of a small tumour on the conjunctiva, which had appeared 6 months earlier. A brown-black fluke was removed, which measured 2.4 X 1.3mm and was identified as a mature Philophthalmus, the ova containing miracidia. These trematodes are parasites of the eyes of birds.
