A method of dissolving wood to a large extent in polyhydric alcohols

Milled wood (Scots pine), after impregnation with dil. H2SO4 and drying, was largely dissolved in diethylene glycol or a similar short-chain aliphatic alcohol. The max. dissolution was obtained at 215 deg C leaving a lignin-rich residue amounting to 4% of the original wood under opt. conditions. Modified polyester resins of satisfactory strength were produced from the wood solutions by reacting with maleic and phthalic acid anhydrides.
