A micronutritional growth disorder in Norway spruce

A micronutritional growth disorder in Norway spruce

Folia Forestalia, Institutum Forestale Fenniae (No 432): 13

Thirty-five 10- to 45-yr-old spruce-dominated stands affected by leader dieback were investigated in S. and central Finland during 1978 and 1979. In half of the cases, the damage was caused by frost, in the other half (mainly in peatlands and old fields), boron deficiency was suspected to have been the main cause. The av. B concn. in the needles taken from affected and unaffected trees on peatland sites was 5 p.p.m. and 12 p.p.m. respectively. Visible deficiency symptoms appeared at 6-8 p.p.m.
