A natural experiment in life-history evolution: field data on the introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) to Hawaii

A natural experiment in life-history evolution: field data on the introduction of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) to Hawaii

Evolution 37(3): 601-617

About 150 mosquito fish were introduced from Texas to Hawaii in 1905. A study was made of 1367 pregnant females collected in 1974 from 4 stable and 20 fluctuating reservoirs and the time-series of water levels in the fluctuating reservoirs. Fish from stable reservoirs had fewer offspring, lower reproductive allocations (relative gonad weight), and were thinner, shorter and weighed less than fish from fluctuating reservoirs.
