A new disease of onion caused by mycoplasma-like organism in Japan

A new disease of onion caused by mycoplasma-like organism in Japan

Annals of the Phytopathological Society of Japan 48(4): 551-554

Diseased leaves showing yellowing and stunting with fasciation were associated with MLO in the sieve tubes. Bulbs of diseased plants showed hypertrophy and sprouted earlier than healthy ones after storage. In transmission tests with 5 spp. of planthopper and leafhoppers only Macrosteles orientalis transmitted the disease to onion seedlings. Typical symptoms were expressed 20-28 days after transmission. The transmission rate by natural infection was 3.3-30%.
