A new host record for Rhagoletis striatella (Diptera: Tephritidae)

A new host record for Rhagoletis striatella (Diptera: Tephritidae)

Melsheimer Entomological Series (32): 11

In Mexico, Rhagoletis striatella Wulp is an important pest of cultivated husk-tomatoes (Physalis spp.). Confirmation that this fruit-fly would be found on Physalis in the northern part of its distribution range was obtained in 1982, when 3 females were collected on smooth ground-cherry (Physalis longifolia var. subglabrata) in Centre County, Pennsylvania. One female was ovipositing, and about 40% of the 75 fruits examined from nearby Physalis plants contained larvae of Rhagoletis.
