I. globulifera n.sp. was found in the intestinal epithelium of larvae and pupae of A. maculipennis in the river Chulym, Tomsk region, USSR. The life-cycle of the microsporidian is described and illustrated. It is characterized by being diplokaryotic at all stages of its development, with 2 binucleate spores (3.3-4.4 X 2.2-2.8 mu m) developing from each sporont, held together by a solid sphere (bright sky blue or turquoise in Romanovsky-Giemsa stain) and covered by a pansporoblastic membrane.
