A new reality: Western technology faces pastoralism in the Maasai project

A new reality: Western technology faces pastoralism in the Maasai project

Report of an exploratory workshop on the role of anthropologists and other social scientists in interdisciplinary teams developing improved food production technology: 43-61

Years after the establishment of the Maasai project in Tanzania, its goals had not been realized. This paper provides a discussion of the role of the social scientist in the development and implementation of the technologies within the project to give some understanding of the constraints. Two interrelated technologies -- scientific and managerial -- are discussed first. Then the various roles the social scientist played in these technologies over the project's lifetime are explored.
