A new scarabaeid beetle pest of dryland rice in Bangladesh

International Rice Research Newsletter 8(1): 16-17

Since 1978, Heteronychus lioderes Redt. has caused severe damage to dryland rice in several areas of Bangladesh. The adults chew the base of the stem just above the roots. If the plants are attacked after flowering, damage resembling white-heads results. In the early stages of an attack, rows of dead hills are apparent near the levees. Whole field are later damaged.
