A new system of subsurface irrigation for fruit trees

Trials were carried out on irrigating fruit trees, grapevines, hops and other perennial crops by slow subsurface irrigation. Perforated irrigation pipes made of corrugated polypropylene (23.0 mm diameter) were laid out in each plant row at 0.40 to 0.50 m below the surface. Perforations (2.0 mm diameter), covered by a special lid, served as water outlets (one/plant). The distance between the pipes ranged from 3 to 5 m and their length from 150 to 200 m.
