A rapid method of testing the resistance of sugarcane to leaf scald disease

Setts of clone B 4119 were placed vertically and the freshly cut surface sprayed with a suspension of Xanthomonas albilineans. After 1 min the opposite end was similarly treated and setts were again allowed to remain upright for 1 min. Leaf scald symptoms were produced within 2-3 wk and final readings made after 6 months. The new method was more effective than 4 others tested for comparison.
