Surveillance of the region showed a gradual decline in the proportion of cattle possessing FMD antibodies, from 5% of those over two years old in 1978 and 1979 to 2-3% in 1981 and 1982, while in those under two years the proportions fell from 0.6-1.2 to about 0.3%, respectively.
