Assessment of leaf damage caused by northern leaf blight in maize

A disease severity key using leaf area diagrams illustrating different proportions of affected tissue was prepared. The key allows the percentage of leaf area affected on individual plants to be assessed. Its method of use is outlined and the relationship between % leaf area affected on individual plants and the classes of a general disease rating system used widely in the past was examined. [A general rating method for estimating severity of northern leaf blight caused by Setosphaeria turcica (Luttrell) Leonard et Suggs; con. stat. Drechslera turcica (Pers.) Subramanian et Jain of Maize (Z. mays L.) was first proposed by Ullstrup et al. (1945).].
