Biological significance of the weight of newly emerged honeybee queens and weight changes during the pre-oviposition period

Biological significance of the weight of newly emerged honeybee queens and weight changes during the pre-oviposition period

Bulletin of Faculty of Agriculture, University of Cairo 29: 137-169

This study showed that the length of the pre-oviposition period (or age at which the queen starts egglaying) is related inversely to the weight of the queen at emergence; queens which were light on emergence mated later than those which were heavy. Changes in the queen's weight during this period were studied with or without brood (in Langstroth hives, swarm boxes and small mating nuclei); generally, in spring and summer, the queen's weight decreased for 3 days after emergence.
