Characteristics of the waste waters from a dairy factory
The effluent from a dairy factory processing 80 million l milk/yr was analysed during an 18-month study. Av. values of the parameters studied were: pH, 10.2; alkalinity, 2 m-equiv./l; temp., 28 deg C; N content, 31 mg/l; phosphates, 21 mg/l; TS, 1378 mg/l; fat, 181 mg/l; BOD, 838 mg/l; COD, 1345 mg/l; and dissolved O2, 4.1 mg/l. Wash waters from individual sections of the plant were also analysed.
