DM content and yield, respiration rate, sucrose and reducing sugar content and sucrose synthetase activity were measured in pot- and field-grown plants of potatoes Axilia and Pirat. Plant development stage was measured by the proportion of fallen, dried up or yellow leaves in the total leaf number. DM yield increased linearly until leaf loss reached 70% and then followed an asymptotic course. Tuber DM content reached a max. at c. 85% leaf loss.
