Charcoal industry in the Sudan

Sudan appears to be the largest consumer of charcoal in Africa. Charcoal is produced in temporary earthen kilns, which are operated by highly skilled workers in the woodland areas. Sources of supply for the raw material for charcoal production are moving further to the south, away from the main consumer centres in the northern provinces.
